Plant Beds

Today May 5, 2010 the weather was great for working out doors. These are the days everyone wished they could work outside. Even some classes at the college were held outdoors. Cultvating, edging and mulching continue in the landscape. We planted a few new perennials today and replaced salt and snow damaged shrubs. Remember when planting any new areas to prepare the soil with plenty of organic material and get the beds nice and soft through tilling. Also Dig the hole for plants twice as wide and plant the root ball level with th exisisting soil. Give all new plants plenty of water, 1 gallon per foot of growth.

Plant of the Day. Holly, Ilex X Meserveae " Castle Spire" Great as a specimen plant or foundation plant, Full sun to part shade. It can be made into a hedge row. With its seraded edged leafs once established it is very hard for anyone to cut through it.

Tip of the Day. 16 Acres Gardens is great place to shop for ideas for the garden. They do a excellent job with thier displays and the material is fabulous. They are a little expensive put if you look hard enough you can always find something you like.

Politics. I applaud the efforts of Melvin Edwards and his keep Springfield Clean Campaign. Liter is a huge problem and my crew has to do liter patrol everyday. The new worst liter is cigarette butts. With no ashtrays in The cars people just chuck them out the window. Also seems like it would be toxic to birds and fish. Springfield needs a liter Tax. We will leave that issue for another time.

Fiinally, watch the water gage and get dirty!

Good Luck,
Eddie Pagliro
