Winter Clippings

A Vase of Garden shrubbery cut in January from the Big Garden
During the winter months you can go right out into your own yard and find different shades and textures of plant material to make an indoor decoration. Also much of the plants that you are taking cuttings from most likely need a good pruning anyways. Most pruning of small and medium sized shrubbery can start now, but I really prefer to wait until February to start clean up pruning. With the weather being what it is I decided to get a head start on some pruning, and made this nice arrangement out of some of the most common things one will find in his or her own back yard. Here we used Blue Atlas Cedar, Blue Rocket Juniper and Holly to fill the vase. Then added Gold Threaded Cypress for a different color and texture of the fir. Added Rhododendron and Magnolia and this little piece will bring beauty to your home in the middle of January.

I generally do not like to start most pruning until February. The regenerative cuts that are intended for new growth will some times dry out and not produce the new growth expected. The best time to do most pruning to flowering shrubs is right after they flower. But if you are looking to lower the size of foundation plants February is a good time to remove older canes and poke holes into the plants canopy so that to provide air and light to the plant. We will discuss this type of pruning in a future post. Also we will look into pruning flowering fruit trees.
